Vintage Set of Nesting Wheary Suitcases
This vintage set of nesting Wheary suitcases, was made in the USA by the Wheary Trunk Company, based in Racine, Wisconsin, most probably in the 1940’s.
The set comprises three matching tan coloured suitcases that nest inside each other, with dark leather carrying handles and trim around the edges, that has white contrasting stitching.
The interiors have a coffee coloured silk lining and have a sew-in label stating, “Wheary, the name to remember in luggage”.
There is a metal tag on the outside of each case bearing the name, “B. Altman & Co., Fifth Avenue, NY”, which is where the luggage was most likely purchased.
B. Altman and Company was a luxury department store and chain, founded in 1865, with its flagship store on Fifth Avenue.
These pieces would be ideal for storage of accessories, like belts or summer/winter clothes when not in use, or could be used as a coffee table, perhaps with a smaller suitcase on top.
Pieces of luggage like this, also work well when stacked on top of each other at the end of a bed, or to create a unique bedside table.
This well-travelled vintage set of nesting Wheary suitcases bears marks, scuffs and stains, which are consistent with their age and use.
